How To Create a Mom Morning Routine That You’ll Love
One thing I believe wholeheartedly is that without a mom morning routine, it’s hard to get everything done in a day that you’d like to. The mom morning routine is important for everyone, kids included. It sets the tone for the entire day. It creates a schedule so everyone knows what to expect. It nourishes your body with healthy food. And it allows you to take time to go through what tasks needs to get done for the day.
It took me awhile after Lue was born to establish a mom morning routine. In the beginning, I allowed the mornings to be whatever they needed to be - sometimes I was a zombie from being up all night with a baby. Other mornings I felt productive and could get a couple small things done.
WHY IS A MOM MORNING ROUTINE SO IMPORTANT?
Lue is turning three soon, and things have definitely settled down. We have a pretty regular sleep schedule and I’m able to have more time for myself.
Setting up a Mom Morning Routine has allowed me to be more productive throughout the entire day. I really resonate with this idea because when I didn’t do this during the first year of motherhood, I felt easily lost. The days would to blur into one, which made me feel really unmotivated.
Another big reason why a routine is so important is that it has the power to change our future. If you have bigger picture goals you want to accomplish, then you can be working towards them daily in small increments. Let’s say you want to exercise more this year. Planning to do this in a regular routine will help you accomplish the goal. Even 10 minutes a day can make such a big difference.

HOW TO CREATE A MOM MORNING ROUTINE THAT YOU’LL LOVE!
1) GET UP EARLIER THAN YOUR KIDS
There’s something so beautiful about the quiet of the morning before anyone else wakes. So if possible, try getting up an hour or more before your kids. Use this time for you and your self care. This could mean meditation, yoga, working out, journaling, planning for the day, blogging, or anything else that lights you up. If you find it hard to get up this early, try going to bed earlier.
2) SKIP THE SOCIAL MEDIA
Waking up first thing and immediately grabbing your phone to read emails and scroll through instagram is not a good way to start the day. But I’m totally guilty of it, and you might be too. Unfortunately, this can easily put you down a rabbit hole of useless information, or even worse, comparing yourself to someone else in a way that makes you feel inadequate… what an awful way to begin your day, don’t you think? Instead, focus on what lights up your soul and makes you happy. The only way to do this is by avoiding outside distractions that don’t matter.
3) HYDRATE WITH WATER
Drinking water is an effective way to rehydrate your body after a long period of sleep. Unfortunately, many people do the exact opposite and dehydrate their body first with a cup of coffee. Drinking water has many health benefits. It jump starts your metabolism, helps cleanse the colon, flushes out toxins from your body, and helps fight off sickness. The human brain is made up of 75% water, so staying hydrated will help to prevent you feeling sluggish and affect how you take on the rest of your day.
4) EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST
The food that you eat in the morning will set the tone for the day. Give your body long lasting energy by avoiding any sugary baking (muffins, banana bread etc), cereals and drinks. It will only create a big energy slump mid-morning that will leave you feeling unmotivated and craving more sugar. Instead, I recommend trying a recipe from the nourishing breakfast guide.
4) MOVE YOUR BODY
It doesn’t have to be much, but moving your body will help to get your energy going for the day. Even if it’s just a few simple stretches or a sun salutation, this will help increase physical and mental energy. "Contrary to popular belief, exercising doesn't make you tired -- it literally creates energy in your body. Your body rises up to meet the challenge for more energy by becoming stronger," says nutritionist Samantha Heller.
5) REVIEW YOUR SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY
What are the main tasks you want to accomplish for the day? I use the time blocking method to schedule my days. I like to create a plan for my week on Sundays and then review it each morning. Your tasks should align with your bigger picture goals that you’ve set for yourself. One of my current goals is to completely declutter our house of any unnecessary items we no longer need. What are the small habits I can create every day to help get me there? I don’t have a lot of time to clean every day, so I commit to 15 minutes of decluttering one section of my house every day. It’s a small thing, but it’s helping me work towards my bigger goal of a decluttered house.
My Mom Morning Routine is constantly evolving as my daughter grows. So being flexible with that has really helped me to get the most out of my own days. To create a routine that works best for me, I’ve had to do a few things to get there.
Here are some last tips that have really helped me in the last two years…
CREATE A ROUTINE BUT PLAN FOR FLEXIBILITY. It’s important to have guidelines to follow during the week, but also just as important to allow for changes when necessary. Allow an extra few minutes flexibility on tasks you know can vary.
WORK WITH YOUR CURRENT SEASON OF LIFE. If you have a newborn, then your schedule will look different than if you have a toddler. You’re probably up more at nighttime for feedings and you sleep in smaller chunks throughout the day. If you’re having a hard time scheduling, work with what you’ve got for time being and know that this is temporary. If you’re finding it really hard, know that this too shall pass.
SCHEDULE IN SELF CARE. This is one of the most important things you can do for your schedule. What are the things that relax you? What are things you enjoy doing? It is important that you make time for these things as well. I try and do one of these things in the first hour of my day before my daughter wakes up.
GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED WITH THE MOM MORNING ROUTINE. Do your kids help to make breakfast? If they don’t it might be worth giving a try, this will take some of the workload off your shoulders and your kids will enjoy the responsibility.

Being a mom is hard. It’s full of chaotic moments that can make us feel easily lost. Take control of your time and your days. Spend less being overwhelmed by it all and create a mom morning routine that you love. Get up early before your kids and use the time to practice self care. Drink water first thing before you eat, move your body even if it’s just a few simple stretches or a sun salutation. Avoid the distractions of social media, and use the time blocking method to get the most out of your daily to-do’s.
And lastly, if your day doesn’t go exactly as planned, don’t sweat it. Be gentle on yourself and just keep trying. Life isn’t meant to be perfect, and you’re doing great mama!
